Babies and toddlers will stick absolutely everything in their mouth. Dirty socks. Toys. The dogs tail. It really doesn’t matter when they are teething. If they can see it, reach it and grab it, it is going in the mouth.
This can become a problem for you jewelry-wearing, baby-holding mommas. Luckily there is an alternative! Silicone teething necklaces can be fashionable and functional for both baby and mom. Here are some of the benefits of mama-worn silicone teething necklaces:
- No damage to personal jewelry. No baby teeth marks and no your ripping favorite delicate silver chain (yep, personal experience).
- Strengthens babies gums. Food-grade silicone is BPA, PVC, non-toxic and shatter-resistant. It is safe for those baby gums to gnaw on as they develop. And as their little gums gnaw it helps to minimize the pain, making for a less cranky baby and a happier mom.
- Baby focus while breastfeeding (or bottle feeding). Sometimes babies can get restless or unfocused while feeding. Colorful beads can help them focus and they can see, touch and pull on these necklaces.
- Silicone beads are both cold and heat resistant. Because they water proof and are not effected by heat, they are also safe from bacteria and mold formation. Bonus: They are easily cleaned and dishwasher safe!
Silicone teething necklaces are great, but just like anything you should always supervise your baby or toddler with these necklaces.
If you take a look at store bought almond milk you’ll notice that almonds are not the only ingredient. There are several items on the list of ingredients including soy. Soy lecithin is an ingredient found in almost all the processed foods we eat today. This is a cheap preservative and it seems like it is in everything. After much research, I made the decision to avoid soy whenever possible. “Harmful or Harmless? Soy Lecithin” is a great article to read to make up your own mind about soy.
Some almond milk also contains an ingredient called carageen, even if you splurge and buy organic. The Food Babe has an extensive explanation on this ingredient that has been dubbed a carcinogen allowed into organic foods.
Making your own almond milk is simple, quick and leaves no waste! And as a plus, you get to use the leftovers as almond flour. Follow this simple recipe to make your own almond milk/flour:
- Pink Salt
- Cup for catching
- Nut Milk Bag (Check out Rawesome Creations)
- Measure 1 cup of unsalted almonds and pour in blender
- Measure three cups of water and pour in blender (always 3x the water as almonds)
- Add a pinch of salt and one tsp of vanilla.
- Blend for several minutes until almonds are blended well.
- Line a large measuring cup with the nut milk bag and pour liquid from blender.
- Squeeze the remaining liquid into the cup and store in the refrigerator.
- Layout the remaining crumbs on a cookie sheet and let them dry for 8-12 hours
Since homemade almond milk does not contain any preservatives, it only has a shelf like of five days. So drink up and enjoy!
The short answer: yes. The pump and dump is more for mom’s peace of mind and pumping and dumping that sweet liquid gold does not speed up the elimination of alcohol from the body. Does that mean that you favorite vino is a no-no while breastfeeding?
Don’t throw in the sober towel quite yet; reasonable intake of alcohol is A-okay. But the term “reasonable” is not relative to each individual. While you may have been the beer-pong champ in college, reasonable intake with a breastfeeding baby takes on a whole new meaning. Because alcohol can affect both the baby and/or your supply when consumed in large amounts, it should be restricted to 1 – 2 drinks.
In “Myths About Breastfeeding” Dr. Hale states, “Reasonable alcohol intake should not be discouraged at all. As is the case with most drugs, very little alcohol comes out in the milk. The mother can take some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers.”
And let’s face it, some days we really need those two glasses of “mommy’s juice”.

Since starting my mom-targeted business, I have had several people ask my if my cookies are made from breastmilk! While I have no doubt that someone, somewhere has tried this, my cookies are not those. One Bad Motherbaker’s Lactation Cookies are made to encourage lactation in nursing mothers. They will not defy the laws of nature and cause men or children or non-nursing mothers to start lactating; trust me when I say my husband has tested this theory time and time again. These cookies are great, however, for a vitamin boost in anyone’s diet.
These cookies have three magic ingredients that encourage milk production in nursing women.
- Brewer’s Yeast – To be quite honest, this ingredient has a very off-putting taste and smell, and the cookie is the tasty cloak it hides under. This yeast, while also used to make beer, is rich in folic acid, B12 and B2, and protein. Selenium and chromium, which are an essential part of a nursing momma’s diet, are also contained within this magic dust. The vitamins and minerals in Brewer’s yeast are also thought to aide in fighting off both fatigue and the baby blues. Nursing or not, Brewer’s yeast is a great source of protein and B vitamins!
- Whole Oats – Are known to aide in warding off inflammation, nourish the cardiovascular system, stabilize blood sugar and provide a good source of fiber.
- Flaxseed – This ingredient is a rush of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids (a.k.a. the good fats) which are good for heart and digestive health.
Making these ingredients part of your diet is essential, nursing or not. I am no longer nursing, but I still make these cookies for my kids so that these vitamins, minerals and good fats can still be a part of their diet.
If you are nursing, and do not need the aid of a galactagogue, it is still important to get the proper amount of vitamins and minerals into your diet. These cookies, combined with your prenatals and drinking plenty of H2O can help you maintain your milk supply and the nutrients that are being passed along to your baby.

I run my business on helping and empowering breastfeeding women. Being able to nourish your baby the way nature intended is a beautiful thing; something I didn’t fully understand until I was able to do this myself. Before I had kids, I was kind of indifferent to the whole public breastfeeding issue, but now I have walked in those shoes. I’ve been out in public with a hungry, screaming baby. Yes, it calms a hungry baby, but it’s also an incredibly amazing bonding experience between mother and child I feel I was privileged to do.
In my experience, I was never made to feel ashamed of what I was doing. My friends never minded if I popped out a boob to feed my daughter while talking to them over soup and salad at Panera. I had never even encountered a stranger who made me feel uncomfortable; in fact, many were supportive. I guess that’s why this video made my blood boil! I didn’t even know people like this really existed. Many times I have seen articles defending breastfeeding in public, something I never EVER felt like I really needed to do. For one, it’s the law, and two it’s nature! This video truly shows there are people out there who are disgusted by breastfeeding.
Beets are disgusting! There I said it. I dissed one of the healthiest foods in the world. It is unfortunate that I don’t like beets because they are a great source of belatains. Instead of just name dropping a nutrient, let me tell you what it is good for.
Belatains are known for their anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties, and in some studies were even found to reduce the size of tumors. Long story short, they are VERY good for you. Luckily I have found a way to enjoy beets and it is in a way that preserves the nutrients the best! Juice!
Nine months ago I invested in something I didn’t think I would ever buy; scratch that… I had never thought of buying. Then a juice bar opened near me, I tried it once, and I was hooked. The problem was it was expensive as hell to buy a fresh juice everyday. Don’t get me wrong, it can still be pricey to juice veggies at home, but way less so than buying it from the local juice shop.
So here is beet favorite juice recipe:
- 1 large beet
- 2 peeled and cut oranges
- 2 sliced pears
- 3 carrots
- half a coconut (or coconut H2O)
This is enough for about three people. Or, save it in the fridge for up to three days!
This smoothie is pretty straight forward, minimal clean up and a hit with the kids. Unfortunately, there are zero vegetables in this one. Though my usual purpose of smoothies is to sneak something green into my kids’ diets, this one is still packed with vitamin C and is especially good for an immune kick!
- 2 peeled and sliced oranges
- 1 cup of strawberries
- 1/2 cup of coconut H2O
- 2 tsp of honey
*For nursing mothers, add 1-2 tbsp of flax/brewer’s yeast mix, any more than that will have it tasting too yeasty!
P.S. You don’t have to be a nursing mother to use this nutrient-packed miracle powder. In fact, I use it in my kids smoothies to add that extra vitamin boost!
